Introduction
Udaipur is a city in Rajasthan, India, renowned as the City of Lakes. It is the historic capital of the state of Meewar in the former Rajputana Agency. It was founded in 1559 by Udai Singh II of the Rajodesian Rajput family, when he moved his capital from the city of Chittorgarh to Udaipur after Chittorgarh was besieged by Akbar. It remained the capital until 1818 when it became a British monarchy, after which the state of Meewar became part of Rajasthan when India gained independence in 1947.
The city is located in the southern part of Rajasthan, near the Gujarat border. It is surrounded by the Aravali Range, which separates it from the desert of Thar. About 660 km from Delhi and about 800 kilometers from Mumbai, located between two of India’s largest cities. In addition, communication with the ports of Gujarat offers Udaipur a great opportunity to land. The city is served by Maharana Pratap Airport. Common languages spoken are Hindi, English, and Rajasthani (Mewari).
Why it is so famous
Udaipur, called “the most popular place on the Indian subcontinent” by British ruler James Tod, is a tourist destination and is known for its history, culture, beautiful landscapes and palaces of the Rajput period. It is best known as the “Lakes City” because of its advanced pool system. It has seven lakes around the city. In addition to the lakes, Udaipur is also known for its historic castles and palaces, museums, galleries, nature reserves and gardens, temples and architecture, as well as traditional exhibitions, festivals and structures.
Tourism drives the market in Udaipur, but minerals, marble manufacturing, chemical production and development, electronics manufacturing, and the handicraft industry also add value. Here are the 5 Best Places to Visit in Udaipur.
